Like more than half the country— and I say this with full confidence that more than half the country agrees with me— I am devastated by the results of this election.
The first time Donald Trump won I was willing to take the loss. Willing to believe fair is fair and we lost. I should have known better but I’ve never been very political. I became political when my own senses told me that every word out of Trump’s mouth was a lie and when his admiration for dictators was on full display but his concern for immigrants and respect for hardworking Americans was not.
I don’t want to listen to the talking heads dicuss the myriad of reasons we lost. It wasn’t Biden’s fault. It wasn’t the voting blocs we didn’t reach. Lord knows it wasn’t Kamala. She and Tim Walz infused our beleaguered country with hope and joy.
At first I believed it was our antiquated Electoral College system, but that does not explain Trump winning the popular vote. Here I was initially confused and blamed my fellow citizens for sleepwalking into autocracy. (I also blame Mitch McConnell who could have voted for impeachment years ago and saved his country this misery, but that‘s an old story.)
While I don’t know who to blame, truth is there are so many questions which need to be answered.
Donald Trump was particularly vile in the last weeks of his campaign. He stood on a debate state and claimed Haitians were eating cats and dogs. He told his supporters he didn’t need their vote. His MSG rally brazenly echoed the 1939 Nazi rally at the same venue. Most notably, Trump shared that he and the speaker had a secret that they wouldn’t reveal until after the election. He predicted the senate would be taken pretty easily and that with this little secret they’d do well in the House. He even predicted that Mike Johnson would be around for a long time.
What was that little secret that made Donald Trump so confident?
Donald Trump is a felon who has never exemplified our American ideals so I don’t want to hear talking heads discuss why we lost the elections. We lost the election because of Donald Trump and Mike Johnson’s little secret.
I believe in the peaceful transfer of power, but I also believe investigative reporters need to investigate. Courts need to be prepared. And talking heads need to stop blaming the vast majority of good, hardworking American citizens (whatever voting bloc they fall into) who did their part and voted.
Truth is democracy has taken a hit and we who are devoted to it must continue to speak out and resist the danger posed by Donald Trump and his secrets.
